All,
The first Round of 32 games were played on Saturday and again, the top seeds mostly coasted to victory. Overall #1 Duke again kept the ratings up for a while, stumbling early against TCU. But in the end, they won by 23 and have predictably punched their ticket to Notre Dame. Michigan, Houston, Michigan State, and Illinois all cruised to easy victories. Round 1 darlings High Point held tough with Arkansas as long as they could, but ultimately were outmatched by the Razorbacks, falling by 6. The lone worse seed to make it to the Sweet 16 in today's action was 11th seed Texas, who took down the villainous* Gonzaga Bulldogs en route to their 3rd victory in this year's tourney. The First-Four participants became the first such team in 5 years to survive the opening weekend. The previous team to achieve the feat was the UCLA Bruins, who made it all the way to the Final Four, which the Longhorns hope to mimic.
In the Pool of 42, our third day of competition brought our 3rd leader. At the top of the pool, Sarah Ganton used high scoring outputs from Michigan and Illinois combined with respectable scores from Louisville and High Point in losing battles to scream to the top of the standings. She showed little remorse in knocking off Day 2 leader, Joan "her mom" Ganton, who fell all the way to 12th place. Lorenzo "consonants are for suckers" Quiogue sits in second place, with high scoring Florida, Arizona, and Alabama still to play on Sunday. Neal Griffin, Tom Melton, and Leo Dorfman round out the top 5.
At the bottom of the pool, Christopher Davis has reclaimed his Day 1 bottom spot, though in positive territory this go-round. Barring uncharacteristically low scoring affairs from Arizona, Connecticut, and Alabama on Sunday, however, his lead will once again be short-lived. Luke Schreiber will almost certainly benefit from a Davis leap frog maneuver, with all of his teams now eliminated. Unfortunately for Luke, he may have peaked (troughed?) too soon? If he end tomorrow in last place he will become the first recipient of a repechage team (currently Houston), which will earn him only positive points for the rest of the tourney.
The 525 points that Sarah Ganton earned on day 3 were not only enough to push her to the top of the mountain, they also were enough to earn the L'Etape prize, winning the stage. Meanwhile, newcomer Eamon Redington finds himself in coveted 87th place, taking home our 3rd Swtizerland award - earning back his (or his father's) entry fee.
After 3 days of games, no entrant has all 6 teams remaining. Only Eric Eckenrode and TJ Cilvick have 5 left. While Luke Schreiber is the only one to have all of his teams eliminated, there are 8 participants that are down to their final team. That includes two entries from Brian Redington as well as Aunt Cathy McDonald, whose clings to only St. John's of her original six all Catholic school lineups.
Thresholds remain at 66 for the masses for Sunday's games, but are adjusted for the following:
Sarah Ganton: 71
Lorenzo Quiogue : 70
Neal Griffin : 69
Tom Melton : 68
Leo Dorfman : 67
Massimo Randazzo : 65
Jaklyn Limoges : 64
Red Rampage BTP John : 63
Luke Schreiber : 62
Christopher Davis : 61

*Of course, I'm not holding a grudge:

3/17/1994 Gonzaga defeats Stanford 80-76 @ Stanford in the first round of the NIT Tournament - considered to be an unfortunate turning point for Zag basketball
