All,
The Sweet 16 finished last night, with Tennessee being the only worse seeded team to advance to the Elite 8, in their 14 point win over a disappointing Iowa State team. Michigan similarly coasted past Alabama en route to their 16th Elite 8 appearance. Duke was not quite as convincing in their win over St. John's. The Red Storm held a 10 point second half lead and seemed poised to knock off the overall #1 seed. Channeling his inner Willis Reed, Caleb Foster played for the Blue Devils - just 3 weeks removed from foot surgery. Seemed like his surgical team got the best advertising they could hope for, as Foster's 11 points in the second half were what propelled Duke to the win. In the other regional semi-final, the Connecticut Huskies looked like they were going to steam roll right past Michigan State - holding a 19 point lead at one point. But the Spartans came all the way back and took the lead halfway through the second half. With just 32 seconds remaining Sparty trailed by just one - but solid free throw shooting by the Huskies' big man Tarris Reed (not one of his stregnths) held them at bay. Michigan State had one final chance when Carson Cooper was fouled with 4.6 seconds left, trailing by 3. After hitting the first free throw, he missed the second - we'll give him the benefit of the doubt that that was on purpose - but Michigan State couldn't grab the rebound and the Huskies breathed a sigh of relief right into a matchup with Duke.
In the Pool of 42, Kim Huang has taken over the top spot thanks to a prolific 419 point day - with scores from Michigan, Alabama, and Tennessee. Prior leader Lorenzo Quiogue slips into second place, followed by Jakub Stosik and Ben Nemser. Erick Eckenrode is back at 6th place, but is the highest ranking entrant with 3 teams still alive. With Michigan, UConn, and Iowa all still dancing, he has a shot to get 3 teams into the Final Four and contend for the Pool of 42 championship. At the bottom of the pool, Luke Schreiber still holds the lead - setting up a classic mother (Kim Huang)-son reign of terror the likes of which have not been seen since Alexander the Great and Olympias*. He will be earning repechage points from Illinois in today's game, so we will see if he can hold up his end of the conquest. BTP John and Andrew Limoges are poised just above him, both with no teams remaining. Will the spectre of a repechage for one or both them leave the window open for another entrant to take the final place at the bottom?
Kim's three team extravaganza was enough to win her the day 6 E'Tape award by more than 50 points. Sitting in the middle of our standings after Day 6 is Kathleen Cahill, who pockets $20 thanks to the Switzerland Award. For those keeping score, that's the 12th different entrant to take home one of the first annual daily prizes. Other leaders are Eric Eckenrode with the most "regular" points, overall leader Kim Huang with most international points, overall bottom leader Luke Schreiber with closest to 0 award - which will almost certainly be a package deal with the low score. Lorenzo Quiogue and BTP John currently sit in silver medal position. And everyone is still in contention for the mystery prize. Promise!
Seven entrants still have 3 teams remaining, 56 have 2+, and 36 are just hoping for the standings to move around them.

* Is Norman Bates and his "mother" considered a reign of terror? If so, I guess that was more recent than ancient Macedonia
